Frequently asked questions

What are the most common questions families ask you about navigating care proceedings or about your support group?

Families often ask what to expect during care proceedings, what their rights are, and how decisions are made. Many want to know how to prepare for meetings or assessments, what support is available to them, and how our group can help. A common concern is also understanding possible outcomes and how they can have their voice heard throughout the process.

What key information do you think families absolutely need to know before joining Holding Hands or when they're looking for support?

Families need to know that they will be welcomed into a safe, non-judgemental space where they can speak openly and feel heard. It’s important to understand what support is offered—emotional support, shared experiences, and guidance—while also being clear that the group does not replace legal advice.

They should also know how to access support, what to expect from sessions, and that everything is handled with respect, confidentiality, and care. Above all, families should feel reassured that they are not alone and that support is available when they need it most.

Are there any worries or misunderstandings that families often have about care proceedings or support groups that you'd like to clear up?

Many families worry that they won’t be listened to or that decisions have already been made before they’ve had a chance to share their side. It’s important to understand that processes are meant to consider all information, and families do have a voice.

There can also be misunderstandings about support groups. Some people feel unsure about joining, worrying they may be judged or that their situation isn’t “right” for support. In reality, support groups are safe, welcoming spaces where people can share as much or as little as they feel comfortable.

Another common concern is thinking they have to face everything alone. In truth, there is support available—both practical and emotional—and reaching out can make a real difference.

We aim to create a space where families feel reassured, informed, and supported without pressure or judgment.
